Nurturing Green on Shark Tank India

Welcome to the first match-off of season 4! The rules are simple: the sharks will first hear pitches from two businesses, but they can’t reveal their investment decision until both pitches are over. This is a great way to add some gamification to the reality show.

But the best part is that the sharks don’t have to choose only one, they can invest in both if they like. Nurturing Green was fighting with Kyari today, and both have plant nursery brands.

Here are the key details about their pitch on Shark Tank:

Nurturing Green is an online nursery company that provides fresh and healthy plants. You can use them for gifting as well as home decor. Along with plants, the company also has products for home gardening.

You can get the plants from various retail stores across India and online marketplaces. One of the best plants for beginners to start with is their Lucky Bamboo Plant, available on Amazon (*Affiliate Link):

What to learn from them?

Here are some things you can learn from Nurturing Green:

  • Available on Quick Commerce: Quick Commerce platforms like Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart are booming in India, where the Nurturing Green products are now available. Customers can quickly buy the plants for gifting purposes.
  • Personalized WhatsApp: The company provides an AI Chatbox through WhatsApp for the customers to know more about their plants. This builds a consistent connection between the customer and the company.
  • Lifetime Warranty: The company buys back the old plants. This way, they don’t lose a customer. Otherwise, a customer might leave his home gardening hobby if their plants go dead.

Did Nurturing Green get the deal on Shark Tank?

Founder was looking to get ₹1 crore for 1% equity. He needs it for capex by expanding his warehouses and pouring more money into marketing.

Regarding sales, they made around ₹13.8 crores in FY 2023-24 and sustained a low margin of just 5%. However, the founder said that as the revenue grows, his EBITDA will grow as some of the costs right now are stuck in salaries (fixed costs).

But the major problem was the competition from local gardeners. Still, the founder thinks that his supply chain experience will make him stand out among all the players, even the new-age startups.

Vineeta thought the answers in the pitch were a little too on the nose, but still found a great ambition inside the entrepreneur.

She was the first to offer a deal because she liked the retail side of the business, which other sharks were actually not happy with.

About The Founder

Annu Grover is the founder and CEO of Nurturing Green.

Annu did his MBA from BIMTECH, worked in Austria for some time, but later returned to India in 2010 to start his own business. He also started another brand Zaima in 2022, a hyperlocal Gardening Marketplace.

The one thing I like about Annu is his focus on sustainability. While most startups now want to reach unicorn status even with major losses, Annu wants to become an Indicorn.

An Indicorn is an India startup with at least ₹100 crore in sales, but is profitable also. Shark Kunal Bahl was the one who coined this term.

Interestingly, Annu had already met shark Kunal Bahl years ago.

Before Shark Tank, he only had one major investment round in 2019, in which PayTm founder Vijay Shekar Sharma participated.

After The Tank Update

After the pitch aired, the founder celebrated the journey with his family and how the pitch got featured in many reputed news portals. On the website, they offered a 10% discount on their website with the coupon code: SHARK10.

Nurturing Green aims to reach ₹100 crores by 2026-27, and hopes to restart the landscaping business after the milestone. The founder is also hopeful for good growth with the quick commerce route.

By the way, another business featured in this episode was Kyari.

Takeaways

So now you know about Nurturing Green’s pitch on Shark Tank India. I think Vineeta made a good investment as the founder’s knowledge over the years will help them stay relevant in this tight niche for a long time.

And if you don’t know who I am? I am Ranish Chauhan a.k.a. Fulmino Fan, a Fan of the Shark Tank show.
