Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel’s movie, which is set in India, might directly come to OTT for the Indian audience. Let’s find out when.
Monkey’s Man Release in India Postponed?
When the first trailer for the film was released, everyone around the world was excited to see what Patel did in his directorial debut.
Since Monkey Man was set in India highlighting the culture, netizens were sure that could become a big hit here. There are also Indian actors like Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikander Kher, and Makrand Deshpande in it.
However, it looks like the film will not be shown on the big screen in Indian theatres.
Universal Pictures India has indefinitely postponed Monkey Man’s release in India. There is no official update on its release date by the studio, while the film is already running in US theatres from 5 April 2024.
There are many possible reasons why it is postponed. Some are reporting that since the film explores various aspects of Indian Culture, Caste and Religion, the CBFC (or Indian Censor Board) will cut a lot of scenes. There is also politics!
A recent report also mentioned that this is the same reason why Netflix decided to not release it on their platform directly, as it features many references to Hindu gods and Indian politics.
So, there is a high chance that CBFC will suggest a lot of edits, which have to be later approved by the studio. This certification process will take a lot of time.
And not just that, Monkey Man has been Rated R for violence and nudity in the USA also, which usually don’t go well with CBFC.
Even BookMyShow and many other ticketing websites have removed the release date, which was once set for 19 April. There are still rumours that it might premiere on 26 April in India, but it would be too late by that time.
It will be there on streaming before that.
When & Where will Monkey Man stream in India?
The reviews of Monkey Man were quite overwhelming from both critics and the general public. Everyone praised the action and acting.
Monkey Man might come to be available on VOD and Digital Platforms from 23 April 2024, according to some sources. Even if it is true, we are not sure that the same will happen in India.
There is no also official confirmation that any major streaming platform like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ Hotstar will stream Monkey Man anytime soon in India.
These OTT services might not have a problem with the R-rated nature of the film, as most of them uncensored versions of the movies when it released digitally.
But if they add a provocative film like Monkey Man, they might face heat from some Indian audiences.
So, there is little to no hope that anyone residing in India can watch Monkey Man officially, and even if they do, it will be highly censored.
About The Movie
Dev Patel originally had this idea to direct something himself in 2018, which he finally shot in early 2021 in Indonesia. Netflix initially bought the film for 3 times its budget, but later opted out from distributing it.
However, Jordan Peele came as a saviour and decided to join the production. He convinced Universal Pictures to acquire it from Netflix and show it in theatres.
Finally, here is the official synopsis of the film (via the official website): “An anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”
