Christopher Nolan is back with another blockbuster by bringing Homer’s legendary Greek epic to the big screen. If you are planning to watch The Odyssey in India, this is your complete release guide, including date, runtime, CBFC rating, cast, IMAX, OTT, and more.

Here are all your questions answered:
1) When is The Odyssey releasing in India?
The Odyssey is releasing in India on 17 July 2026.
This is the same day as in theUS by Universal Pictures, so fans won’t have to wait longer than global audiences.
Bollywood Hungama reports that the movie will exhibit on more than 2,500 screens in India, one of the biggest releases for a Hollywood film in our country.
Fun Fact: While Universal Pictures is the film’s global distributor, Warner Bros. India will handle its theatrical distribution in our country.
2) In which languages will it be released in India?
The Odyssey is available in 4 languages in India: English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
It is common for major popular hollywood movies to be released in multiple local languages. Usually, Kannada and Malayalam are also available, like for Marvel movies, but this is not the case with The Odyssey.
However, we need to remember that Christopher Nolan’s last movie, Oppenheimer, was not even dubbed in Tamil and Telugu for theatres. So, compared to that, at least there are more options.
Also, when Oppenheimer arrived on JioHotstar in India, it added additional language options such as Bengali and Marathi. The same could happen this time.

3) What is The Odyssey story about?
The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, a Greek king trying to return home after the Trojan War.
While the war is over, his journey home lasts another 10 years because he faces monsters, gods, and impossible changes.
Meanwhile, back home, his wife Penelope struggles to protect their kingdom.
This adventurous story is based on Homer’s The Odyssey, one of the most famous works of literature ever written.
4) Is it a sequel or a standalone film?
The Odyssey is a completely standalone movie.
You don’t need to watch any previous film because it isn’t connected to another franchise.
But if you like some background, you can watch Troy (2004) starring Brad Pitt. The Odyssey storyline is a sequel to Homer’s Iliad, which was adapted in Troy. However, important events of the Iliad are added in The Odyssey, including the Trojan horse sequence.
Fun Fact: Christopher Nolan was reportedly considered to direct Troy (2004) during the film’s early development. However, the project ultimately remained with Wolfgang Petersen, who directed the film from start to finish.
5) What is the Age Rating of The Odyssey by the CBFC?
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given The Odyssey an “A” certificate in India.
The “A” certificate means viewers must be at least 18 years old to watch it in the cinema. Similarly, it received an R-rating in the US.
The movie received the certificate with no scenes being cut. The runtime of the movie is the same as in the US. You can learn more about Indian film age ratings here.
However, there is still a chance that some profane words may be muted and certain explicit scenes could be blurred or slightly cropped.
We have to remember what happened with Oppenheimer last time. The studio actually submitted a self-censored version to the CBFC, including blurring of the Bhagavad Gita and a CGI dress on Florence Pugh. The CBFC then approved it and gave it a “U/A” certificate.
6) Does the movie contain violence or mature content?
The Odyssey contains violent battle scenes, mature themes, and horror elements.
It features large-scale battles with swords, spears, bows, arrows, sudden attacks, and a bit of gore. In terms of explicit scenes, the film is relatively mild. There are a few verbal references and no such prolonged scene.
7) What is the runtime of The Odyssey?
The Odyssey runs for approximately 2 hours and 52 minutes.
This makes it Nolan’s second-longest movie, just shorter than Oppenheimer.
Interestingly, Nolan confirmed that the runtime has to be kept under control due to technical limitations of the IMAX film projector.
8) Are there any post-credit scenes?
There are no post-credit or mid-credit scenes in The Odyssey.
Christopher Nolan has never been known for adding Marvel-style post-credit scenes to his films.
9) Where and when will The Odyssey stream on OTT in India?
The Odyssey will be streaming on JioHotstar in India, but the OTT premiere date is not confirmed yet.
It is distributed by Universal Pictures, and the official OTT platform is Peacock, but it is not available in India. Universal actually partnered with Jio in India for all their digital streaming rights. Oppenheimer is also playing on JioHotstar.
My prediction is that we will have to wait at least 4 to 6 months for it to drop digitally.

10) Was The Odyssey shot using IMAX cameras?
The Odyssey is the first feature film in history to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras.
Christopher Nolan was actually the first director ever to shoot a commercial movie in IMAX. It all started with The Dark Knight in 2008, and then it continued in all his future films. He always believed IMAX offers the most immersive cinema experience.
Nolan wanted to make a movie entirely with IMAX film cameras for years, but it was not possible because the cameras are extremely loud and not suitable for dialogue scenes. To solve it, IMAX engineers developed a special blimp to reduce the noise.
The result is a sharper image quality with rich colors.
11) Which premium formats will The Odyssey be available in India?
The Odyssey will be released in several premium formats across India, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, EPIQ, PCX, HDR by Barco, PXL, ONYX, ScreenX, and 4DX.
The first choice should be IMAX. The movie was 100% shot in a 1.43:1 aspect ratio for big IMAX screens. Unfortunately, India doesn’t have a 70mm IMAX to showcase it in the best possible way.
We still have 34 Digital IMAX theatres in India. These screens will present the movie in the taller 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio, which still shows more picture than standard cinemas. About 17 of these are IMAX with Laser, which can showcase it in 4K quality. Check the full IMAX in India list here.
But what is different this time is that the expanded footage is not exclusive to IMAX. PLF Screens with a flat 1.85 aspect ratio will also get the bigger footage, similar to IMAX’s size. This includes Dolby Cinema, EPIQ, PXL, HDR by Barco, PCX in Hyderabad,
For viewers who enjoy extra motion and special effects, 4DX adds moving seats, wind, water, fog, and more.
These formats create a unique experience, but the regular standard screen with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio is still a good choice if none of the premium formats are available in your city. Just find a good screen with 4K projection and Dolby Atmos at least.
12) When will bookings for The Odyssey open in India?
Bookings for The Odyssey are already open in India on 8 June 2026.
This is about 45 days before the release date, and quite unusual for a Hollywood movie.
The bookings were for IMAX only. Tickets sold out in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, etc. Demand was so high that the ticket prices went up to ₹3,000, one of the highest for any movie in the country.
More tickets were opened at different intervals in July, in different formats in different cities.

14) Was there an Indian premiere for The Odyssey?
The Odyssey has a special India premiere on 10 July 2026 at PVR ICON IMAX in Mumbai.
Christopher Nolan attended the event alongside Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and producer Emma Thomas.
This was the first Christopher Nolan film to receive a premiere event in India. Nolan has previously come to India and shot certain scenes in a couple of his films: The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Tenet (2020).
15) What is the budget of The Odyssey?
The movie had a production budget of around $250 million, making it Nolan’s most ambitious film ever.
A large part of the budget went into Nolan’s commitment to practical filmmaking. The production was filmed over 91 days across 6 countries at various locations.
He also built massive practical sets, full-scale ships, and the famous Trojan Horse. More than 5,000 costumes were created.
Combined with an all-star cast with such famous names, it’s easy to see why the production cost was so high.

The box-office collection will be added as soon as the movie releases.
However, bookings have already been extremely impressive. Trade estimates put the first day closer to ₹20 crore. Premium formats like IMAX are contributing a significant share of ticket sales.
