Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is one of the most ambitious technical achievements in modern cinema. So, you need to experience it in the best possible way. This is The Odyssey’s premium format guide for cinephiles in India.
Best Formats to Watch The Odyssey in India
The Odyssey became the first-ever feature film to be shot entirely using IMAX film cameras.
Nolan was the first director to bring the IMAX technology to Hollywood with The Dark Knight in 2008. Since then, he has used these film cameras for selected scenes in his movies. The Odyssey takes it one step further by becoming the first movie shot entirely for True IMAX.
The film cameras can capture footage in the expanded 1.43 aspect ratio at a resolution of up to 12K. It is then transformed into physical 70mm film prints and sent to all True IMAX 70mm theatres globally. That way you get the best quality possible.
IMAX 70mm is the best format to watch The Odyssey.
There are only around 41 such theatres globally.
Sadly, India has none.
Actually, we have an IMAX 70mm at Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad, but they do not exhibit commercial movies. That means audiences here cannot watch the exact version Nolan designed.
So, we won’t count it for now. There is no point discussing it.
The IMAX theatres we have in India are digital, with screens that are smaller than true IMAX 70mm screens, although they are still much larger than standard cinema screens.
They also expand the image to a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. See the difference below between IMAX 70mm (1.43) and IMAX Digital (1.90):
Still, all IMAX screens in India are a great way to enjoy it. And we have many other amazing formats.
Another piece of good news is that the expanded ratio is not exclusive to IMAX. Many Premium Large Format (PLF) screens in India also received the movie in a FLAT 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
That FLAT version is almost the same size as the IMAX Digital version. Check the infographic below:
So, I decided to put together all the best formats available in India to watch The Odyssey:

Let’s discuss them one-by-one:
1) Prasads PCX Screen 6 (Hyderabad)
Even above IMAX, I would say the best screen to watch The Odyssey in India has to be the Prasads PCX’s screen in Hyderabad. It is one of the largest screens in India, around 100 feet wide, and equipped with dual 4K laser projectors.
It was also once the last operational 70mm IMAX screen in India. But when the cost became too high, the owners decided to leave the IMAX projector in 2014. The last IMAX movie here was Interstellar.
Although PCX is not the sharpest or the most technically advanced format, I have placed it at the top because of its massive size.

It also got the Flat 1.85:1 DCP since it is a PLF. So, the Odyssey will fill most of the screen throughout the entire movie.
If you are a cinephile and want to visit this famous Prasads PCX, The Odyssey is the perfect movie to get the best experience possible here.
It’s not a 70mm IMAX anymore, but it comes closest to recreating that experience in India.
2) IMAX with Laser
The next best and most widely available option is IMAX with Laser.
While we do not have a commercial 70mm theatre, we have a growing number of IMAX with Laser cinemas that deliver excellent picture quality from 4K projectors and immersive sound.
They will present The Odyssey in the 1.90:1 expanded aspect ratio, which will provide 26% more image:

Laser projection offers brighter image, richer colors, and better contrast.
The Odyssey features a mix of daylight landscapes, ocean sequences, and fire-lit battles, all of which benefit from the improved brightness and dynamic range of laser projection.
3) Dolby Cinema
Many movie enthusiasts consider Dolby Cinema the finest premium format in the world. Dolby Cinema combines Dolby Vision for brighter colours and deeper contrast with Dolby Atmos for immersive, room-filling sound.
Dual laser projection produces deep black levels, rich colours and exceptional HDR performance.
India has 4 Dolby Cinemas and their aspect ratios:
- Pune: Citypride (2.1:1)
- Bengaluru: AMB Cinemas (2.39:1)
- Trichy: LA Cinema (2.39:1)
- Hyderabad: Allu Cinemas (1.85:1)
Hyderabad’s Dolby Cinema (Allu Cinemas) will show the movie in the FLAT aspect ratio on their huge 75ft screen.
4) HDR by Barco (Hyderabad)
HDR by Barco is one of the newest premium cinema technologies available in India. Its biggest strength is brightness and contrast.
Traditional projectors often lose detail in bright highlights or deep shadows. HDR by Barco improves both, creating images with cleaner separation between light and dark areas.
There are only two HDR by BARCO Screens in India, both in Hyderabad:
- AMB Cinemas (Screen 1)
- Prasads Multiplex (Screen 4)
Prasads’s HDR by Barco is a Flat screen, so you get the expanded ratio just like the IMAX.
5) EPIQ
EPIQ is an Indian PLF available in most cities of southern India. These auditoriums usually feature large flat (1.89:1 aspect ratio) screens, laser projection, and Dolby Atmos surround sound. The screens extend from wall to wall and nearly from floor to ceiling.
These theatres feature 4K projectors and have received the 1.85:1 Flat DCP as well. So, the overall experience is almost identical to an IMAX one.

If you live in Andhra Pradesh and can’t visit PCX in Hyderabad, you can also go for Sullurpeta’s EPIQ screen to watch this movie in the biggest way possible.
6) IMAX
If your city does not have an IMAX with Laser auditorium, a regular IMAX theatre is still a solid choice.
Many IMAX locations in India continue to use dual xenon 2K digital projectors. These projectors are not as bright as laser systems. The colors also seem a little faded.
While they are older than laser projection, they still offer benefits over a standard multiplex screen.
The biggest advantage is the expanded 1.90:1 aspect ratio, and the screen size is also bigger. That means you will see more of the frame than you would on a regular screen.
7) PXL or BIGPIX
PXL by PVR and BIGPIX by INOX are PLF screens designed to offer a more immersive experience than a standard multiplex auditorium.
These formats focus on larger screens, high-end projectors, improved seating, and better sound systems.
You can find these PLF screens in Delhi, Noida, Faridabad, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Goa, Indore, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Pune, and Surat.
Some of them are also flat (1.85:1) screens, such as PXL at Cinemagic Unity One Elegante in Delhi, but please confirm that first before booking your tickets. Such flat screens are capable of presenting The Odyssey in its expanded 1.85:1 aspect ratio.
However, several moviegoers have reported that some theatres continued to project the Scope (2.39:1) version even after receiving the Flat DCP.
So, before booking your tickets, it is worth checking with the theatre to confirm whether they are screening the Flat (1.85:1) version. If they are, it is the better choice.
8) ONYX
Samsung ONYX is different from every other format on this list because it does not use a projector. Instead, it uses a giant LED cinema display. Every pixel produces its own light, resulting in deep blacks and very vibrant colours.
The biggest benefit here is that since these are all flat (1.85) screens, you can watch The Odyssey in its expanded frame size.
But just like the issue with PXL, whether they will play the movie in Flat ratio or not, it depends on the theatre management.

The main drawback is size. Most ONYX screens are smaller than IMAX or other premium large-format auditoriums.
9) ICE
ICE, short for Immersive Cinema Experience, adds LED side panels along the walls of the auditorium. During selected scenes, these panels display matching visuals that extend beyond the main screen. Some viewers enjoy this added effect, while others find it distracting.
ICE screens in India are located at:
- PVR Ambience, Gurugram
- PVR Promenade, Vasant Kunj, Delhi
- PVR Director Cut, KOPA, Pune
- PVR Superplex Forum Mall, Bengaluru
They are equipped with a 4K laser projector and Dolby Atmos sound.
10) 4DX
4DX takes immersion in a different direction. Instead of improving the picture, it adds physical effects inside the auditorium. Seats move with the action, while wind, water, fog, scent, and lighting effects are triggered during specific scenes.
For some action movies, these effects can be entertaining. Ocean storms, sword fights, and ship battles in The Odyssey may feel more interactive because the audience experiences motion along with the characters.
However, Christopher Nolan’s films rely heavily on visual storytelling. Frequent seat movement can pull attention away from the cinematography. Many movie fans also prefer to watch an epic film like The Odyssey without physical distractions.
11) Standard Screen
If none of the above formats are available, a standard digital screen is the most widely available way to watch The Odyssey in India.
Modern multiplexes still provide a good experience, especially if they use good projectors and well-maintained sound systems.
The movie itself remains the same, and Nolan’s storytelling will still be effective, but the image is smaller, the sound system is usually less powerful, and you will not get the expanded IMAX frame.

India does not have an IMAX 70mm cinema, so nobody can watch the film in the exact format Christopher Nolan originally intended. Even so, several premium formats offer an excellent experience.
