Last updated on 7 August 2023.

Just like most old Disney classics, The Little Mermaid is now getting a live action treatment. Know all about its release here!

The Little Mermaid release date in India

As we said before, this is the official remake of the 1989’s The Little Mermaid, which itself is based on an older fairy tale.

The Little Mermaid’s release date in India is 26 May 2023. It will only be released in English, and not to be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu.

Walt Disney Studios India also have advertised a new promo with Bollywood star Janhvi Kapoor, which you can check out here:

The initial reviews have also come out and they are quite positive. While it is not as good as the original flick, the performances are appreciated by the fans.

Will it be in IMAX & 3D?

The Little Mermaid will have 26% more footage in IMAX. This is because the movie will be shown in 1.90:1 aspect ratio on IMAX screen for the whole runtime. Also, since The Little Mermaid is also getting converted in 3D format, there will be IMAX 3D versions as well.

All this is great news because most people will want to experience the beautiful scenes on the biggest screen possible. And we know that kids love 3D, so, this will be a great outing for them.

OTT Streaming Update

If you are busy watching it in cinemas, you might be looking for when it will be available digitally. It is easy to guess that this Disney film will be on Disney+ soon.

The Little Mermaid (2023) will be streaming in India on Disney+ Hotstar from 6 Septemer 2023. It will be available in English and Hindi languages.

Great to see that they will now dub the movie in at least Hindi.

Age Ratings?

The Little Mermaid has officially got a PG age rating in the USA. While it does have some scary scenes with little bit of action, it is suitable for kids of all ages. We already knew that Disney will make it as family-friendly as possible.

This also increases the chances of a bigger box office collection in most parts of the world, because families feel safe to watch these classics with their children.

By the way, Fast X just released in India one week before it and got good box office numbers.

About the Movie

This Little Mermaid live-action remake is directed by Rob Marshall, who has also helmed 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns and 4th Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It stars Halle Bailey in the titular role, with Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Jonah Hauer-King as Eric.

Overall, it is expected to gross big numbers, we need to see whether it will be as successful as The Lion King or Aladdin.

In the end, here is the official synopsis of the film (disney.com): ““This is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
