The Boys universe is expanding. Find out more about the spinoff show ‘Diabolical’, what is the cast and why you should watch it?
The Boys: Diabolical Release Date
‘The Boys: Diabolical’ show was released worldwide on 04 March 2022. You can stream it on the ‘Amazon Prime Video’ now.
It is the first official spin-off in this universe. ‘The Boys’ already has 2 seasons out and the 3rd one is coming out this year in 2022. Note that it is an R-rated series just like the original show. Even if this is animated, it is Not suitable for kids at all.
By the way, ‘Wheel of Time‘ is already available on Amazon’s OTT service now.
Episodes & Runtime
The show is very short and it will take you less time than a movie to finish it.
There are 8 episodes in The Boys Diabolical show. Each episode is just about 14 minutes long.
The episode titles are:
- Laser Baby’s Day Out
- An Animated Short Where Pissed-Off Supes Kill Their Parents
- I’m Your Pusher
- Boyd in 3D
- BFFS
- Nubian vs Nubian
- John and Sun-Hee
- One Plus One Equals Two
It is also an anthology series, meaning each episode is a different story; they are not connected to each other. You will get a unique adventure in each new episode. This is similar to Marvel’s What If show, just that everything is still set in one universe (no multiverse here).
This is because each story is written by a different person and they have put their own ideas in it.
‘Diabolical’ Cast
Most of the original cast from ‘The Boys’ are returning to voice their animated counterparts. Anthony Starr appears in two episodes as Homelander.
Other cast members who returned are Chace Crawford as Deep, Colby Minifie as Ashley Barrett, Elisabeth Shue as Madelyn Stillwell and Giancarlo Esposito as Stan Edgar.
But two main actors are not voicing their character: Karl Urban for Butcher and Jack Quaid for Hughie.
Simon Pegg, who played Hughie’s father in the original series, lent his voice to Hughie in this show. This is a reference to the original idea that the character of Hughie in comics is based on Simon Pegg. Butcher is voiced by Jason Isaacs.
Other guest voice cast includes Awkwafina (Shang-Chi), Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals), Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim), Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Aisha Taylor, Seth Rogen, Ben Schwartz, Caleb McLaughlin, Kieran Culkin, Christian Slater, Kenan Thompson, Youn Yuh-Jung, Nasim Pedrad, Kevin Smith, Justin Roiland (Rick & Morty).
Why should you Watch it?
The series was not known to anyone until the 2021’s Brazil Comic-Con. Karl Urban (who plays Billy Butcher) unveiled it there as the first spin-off set in ‘The Boys’ universe.
The idea came to Eric Kripke (Executive Producer) during the pandemic when he wanted to give something to the fans since season 03 was getting delayed. Boys season 03 is releasing on June 03.
And like mentioned before, it is coming out on Prime Video streaming service. You would need an Amazon Prime membership to watch it, get it by clicking it below:
While I was sceptical of the idea of an animated show, I would say it is a Good Show overall. The first episode is below average, but as we go further, it gets fun. So, If you liked ‘The Boys’ series, you will definitely like this one. My favourite ones are episodes 2 and 5.
It is also getting good reviews from both critics and fans. You will also notice many easter eggs.
Another reason to watch it is the Celebrity writers. Some episodes are written by well-known Hollywood celebrities. Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg wrote the first one, Awkwafina wrote episode 5 and Andy Samberg wrote episode 7.
And if you have read the comics, then Episodes 3 and 8 are important to watch. Episode 3 is written by comics writer Garth Ennis and features Billy Butcher (in his comics look). Episode 8 is also special because it is a prequel to ‘The Boys’ series and showcases the first mission of Homelander.
One more that makes the series more special is that each episode is having a different animated style from all around the world. This includes classic American animation, Japanese animation, Korean animation and French comics.
You can see it in the official Trailer:
Finally, let’s end with the official synopsis: “From some of the most unhinged and maniacal minds in Hollywood, today comes Diabolical, a collection of eight irreverent and emotionally shocking animated short films. Featuring stories by Seth Rogen, Awkwafina, Andy Samberg, Aisha Tyler, Justin Roiland, and more, each episode plunges elbow-deep into unseen crevices of The Boys Universe.”
