ls RRR releasing in IMAX?

Yes, the RRR movie will be released in IMAX format. You can watch it in either IMAX 3D or 2D, depending on your city. 

There are 21 IMAX theatres in India right now (2022): 4 in Delhi-NCR, 5 in Bangalore, 2 in Chennai, 6 in Mumbai, 1 in Pune, Thane, Kolkata and Lucknow.

In Delhi-NCR and Kolkata, shows are now available in IMAX 3D for the Hindi version. In Mumbai, Banglore & Chennai, there are shows for both IMAX 3D and 2D for Hindi and Telugu versions.

But is it shot with IMAX cameras?

RRR is shot with Arri Alexa LF cameras, which are certified by IMAX. This also means that it will have a 4K resolution. These cameras are officially approved by the company under their ‘Filmed in IMAX’ program.

The DOP of the movie, Senthil Kumar confirmed this news on his Twitter account. It will have the expanded 1:90:1 aspect ratio for IMAX. So, this is the best way to experience this film.

Arri Alexa LF is the same camera that was used for shooting big Hollywood movies like Dune (2021) and Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) movie is also shot with this.

So, expect a better visual experience when you watch it in an IMAX theatre.

What is IMAX?

IMAX is a premium movie format where their theatres are known for bigger screens with better video and audio quality.

But the main reason to go for this option is that some movies also have an expanded ratio as you can see in the below image from ‘Captain America: Civil War’, meaning you will see more footage in an IMAX theatre compared to a normal one.

Marvel movies in the MCU have had many IMAX releases in the past like ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

While Hollywood and Chinese films are now using the IMAX format for all their big movies, Bollywood and Indian movies are slowly catching up. Before these, only a few Indian movies were released in IMAX.

Bad News for Telugu Fans

While RRR release in IMAX is big news for the Indian audience, Telugu fans will be disappointed since there are no IMAX theatres in Telugu-speaking states like Andhra Pradesh And Telangana.

They will have to go to Mumbai, Chennai or Bengaluru to experience it in IMAX.

While Hyderabad once had the first IMAX in India with ‘Prasad IMAX’, the theatre is now not showing any IMAX movie because it has a film reel projector but new IMAX movies are now shifted to digital.

Watch RRR in 3D or 2D format?

RRR is also getting released in 3D format. 3D is loved by many Indian moviegoers and they love to watch heavy VFX and action movies in it.

So, you now have the choice to watch RRR in 3D or 2D.

About the Movie

RRR is the next project by SS Rajamouli, the man behind the ‘Baahubali’ saga. The rumoured budget of the film is around ₹550 crores, making it the most expensive movie in India. This is why people are excited to watch it on the big screen.

Telugu superstars Jr NTR and Ram Charan are in lead roles, along with Bollywood stars Ajay Devgan and Alia Bhatt in supporting cameos.

The movie has a runtime of 3 hours 2 minutes, releasing on 25 March 2022 worldwide.
