The latest Nolan movie rocked the box office with a big bang! Indians are loving it, but how much did Oppenheimer make?

We were seeing a lot of hype about Oppenheimer on Indian social media sites before the release.

The box-office collection of Oppenheimer in India is ₹131 crores. The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. in lead roles. The worldwide collection stands at $958 Million.

Here is the opening weekend box-office report in India:

• Friday: ₹14.5 crores
• Saturday: ₹16.9 crores
• Sunday: ₹16.8 crores

Weekend shows were houseful in the premium theatres of Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. This is because most Indian Hollywood fans started their Hollywood journey with Nolan’s filmography, so they were very eager to watch it on the big screen.

About 80% of Oppenheimer’s collection in India was from English shows only. That tells us how high the initial buzz for this one was.

Oppenheimer was released in India on 21 July 2023. Initially, it got an A certificate but then got switched to a U/A age rating.

Still, there are some intimate scenes (which were trimmed down) that might affect the family audience. A similar argument can be made for its North American box office since it was rated R in the USA. 

Oppenheimer was not a typical Hollywood Action-Adventure, but a biography. But if after that it manages to cross the ₹100 crores landmark, along with Mission Impossible 7 box-office in India.

The biggest advantage in its favour was the IMAX Marketing. Oppenheimer was shot with IMAX cameras. The IMAX tickets were costlier but they still got sold out for the first weekend.

A premium seat for an IMAX show in Mumbai was sold for a whooping ₹2,450. Mint reported that over 2 lakh tickets were bought in just pre-bookings.

But there will be some competition from Barbie, which was released on the same day. It sold around 50,000 tickets online in pre-booking. So, Barbie’s collection in India might be lower but it is significant.

The mega cast was another big factor. It had big names like Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and Rami Malek on the cast list. However, we can say the same about Barbie’s long cast.

Overall, this will be a great time for the Indian box office and multiplex chains like PVR-INOX will be very happy because they operate most of the IMAX screens in the country.

In the USA, it opened with a $82 Million collection on the weekend and is moving steadily. It performed amazingly in European countries like the UK, France, and Germany.

Oppenheimer OTT Update in India

This movie was distributed by Universal Pictures. So, their Peacock streaming service will be its home in the USA. But what about India?

Oppenheimer will be streaming on JioCinema in India from 21 March 2024. You can watch it in English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali languages. Jio announced it just a day after the film won 7 Academy Awards at the Oscars.

JioCinema is making great efforts to get more international content on their platform. They have partnered with Warner Bros as well as Paramount Pictures in recent times.
