Is Godzilla x Kong Filmed for IMAX?
This is the first film in the Monsterverse franchise to utilize the potential of the IMAX format.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is shot with IMAX-certified cameras, with about 45 minutes of footage in the expanded 1.90:1 aspect ratio.
Cinematographer Ben Seresin has used Arri Alexa Mini LF cameras for Godzilla x Kong, certified under the “Filmed for IMAX” program.
This means that if you watch the movie in an IMAX theatre, it will cover the screen from top to bottom in some scenes. Here is the difference between IMAX and Standard:
This will enhance the experience and make it more immersive. Along with that, IMAX’s projectors are capable of producing sharper visual quality.
It was previously reported that the expanded ratio would run throughout the movie, but that is not true. It is limited to 45 minutes only (about 40% of the runtime). There is also no IMAX 70mm release, like the Dune Part Two.
Remember that the expanded ratio is exclusive to their screens and if you see the same film in some other format, these “IMAX” shots will be cropped to the general 2.39:1 size.
All in all, that makes IMAX the best format to watch Godzilla x Kong in the theatre.
Godzilla x Kong is a film which will be very action–packed, will have loads of Visual Effects and Titans fighting each other on a big battlefield.
Many fans also didn’t get a chance to see the previous Godzilla vs Kong film due to the pandemic. Such films need to be seen in the best way possible.
However, you still then have to decide between two options: IMAX 3D and IMAX 2D.
We recommend the 3D version as there are always some shots in these movies, that are designed to be seen with the glasses with the added visual depth. 3D is still very popular in India, South Korea and other Asian countries.
But in the West, most moviegoers are not too fond of 3D glasses, as they are inconvenient or reduce the screen’s brightness. So, you will find very few 3D shows. But never mind, the 2D option is always there for them.

Which Other Formats Are Better?
IMAX is best, but what if your city doesn’t have one yet? So, there are some formats to give a try.
Dolby ATMOS or any Dolby theatre will be another great option as they have a great audio system to get the best experience.
Godzilla x Kong The New Empire will also be available in 3D format.
We have already discussed it above, but if you are going with kids, then 4DX is a better choice. 4DX screens are equipped with motion-enhanced seats, combined with practical effects like rain, wind and scent.
ScreenX is also formatting this new instalment of Monsterverse, where you get a 270-degree panoramic view, as their theatres have 2 side screens on your left and right wall.
