Bakarmax on Shark Tank India

Bakarmax was founded in 2016. It was featured on the 20th episode of the first season.

Here are the key details about their pitch on Shark Tank India:

Business NameBakarmax
FounderSumit Kumar
Episode no.Season 01 Episode 20
Ask₹35 Lakhs for 5% equity
Accepted OfferNO Deal
SharkNone
Current StatusIn-business

India has a ₹3.5 lakh crores worth market of VFX, Animation and Editing, which Bakarmax wants to make a dent in. But they only want to focus on the Adult mature audience which is neglected by the big companies.

They produce monthly webcomics and animated shorts, as well as many other creators also distribute their content through Bakarmax’s official website. Still, that is not where they get their money from.

That’s why they do a lot of freelancing work like creating animated advertisements, explainer videos, presentations and making social media content for many big brands.

They had a monthly revenue of just ₹5 lakhs at the time of the pitch, where almost all of that was because of their client work. Some of their biggest clients were AirBnB, Amazon Prime, Bingo, OYO and Hero motors.

One of their biggest work is for CRED where he integrated ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ in it:

The pitcher asked for ₹35 lakhs funding by offering 5% of his company. He wants to concentrate more on the animation side, than just publishing webcomics. But Animation requires a big budget to produce.

We had to say, his pitch was one of the funniest in the shark tank till now. But they were still a small startup where they were getting only 9,000 monthly website visitors (and 3K unique visitors), before appearing on the show. That’s where sharks were unimpressed.

Anupam questioned why they haven’t grown that big? Pitcher answered that it was because of poor marketing. Anupam then went out but he advised him to just do more client work from now on and wait for one of their comic characters to go viral.

Aman and Peyush were a bit interested and but they were not ready to invest right now when their business model is not concrete.

In the end, they got NO deal in the tank, which is a bit disappointing.

But one thing we can take from this pitch is what Peyush Bansal said in the end: “Content is the future”.

About Sumit Kumar

Sumit Kumar is the founder and CEO of Bakarmax webcomic and animation studio. He was a comics lover from his childhood. His first comic experience was with legendary cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma, the creator of ‘Chacha Chaudhary’.

He has also written some Indian mature comics also. Interestingly, he was also part of India’s Comic-Con Founding Team.

One of his employees Divyesh Sangani (Divsang) also participated in the pitch with him. He loved Sumit’s work and so, he applied to intern under him. He is an Illustrator and Animator in this startup.

After Shark Tank Updates

While Sumit didn’t get a deal, he at least uploaded a Vlog on their youtube channel, which you can check out by clicking here.

And that’s it. Let’s now wrap up this article with one of Sumit’s jokes from the show: “Why are plants so fit? Because they eat Light.” Lol!

By the way, other businesses in this episode were The State Plate and In A Can.

At last, here is their official company pitch: “Bakarmax is literally India’s best animation and comics studio. Our award-winning webcomic (COMIC CON INDIA AWARD 2019 and 2018) and YouTube shorts have been optioned by media houses. Our graphic novels are India’s bestsellers. The work we’ve done for our clients is known for its storytelling, quality, and punctuality.
