One Battle After Another: India Release, OTT, Censored or Not?

Last updated on 25 September 2025.

Leonardo DiCaprio’s much-talked-about project One Battle After Another is finally hitting cinemas this week. The best news is that it will not be censored in India*, atleast not scene is cut or trimmed. Let’s see what changes are made.

One Battle After Another release date in India

One Battle After Another is set to release in India on 26 September 2025. It was originally set for an August premiere, but later got moved to a wider release, including more IMAX screens.

IMAX is important because it will have a 1.43 Expanded Aspect Ratio. While we will not get to see that (as India doesn’t have any 70mm IMAX), you will get better footage in this premium format.

The normal aspect ratio for this movie is 1.85:1, which will be slightly cropped to 1.90:1 to fit India’s digital IMAX screens:

Make sure to watch it in IMAX as soon as possible. One Battle After Another will only have a 6-day IMAX limited release in India. After that, on 2 October, these screens will be taken by Kantara. Even during the 6 days, it will have to share shows with Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc.

Also, note that even with the little hype for this film, and a well-known name like Leonardo DiCaprio in the cast, the studio has still not decided to get it dubbed in Hindi, Tamil, or Telugu. Maybe that will happen when it comes on Hotstar, but till then, we have to wait.

It got saved from the ‘Censor Board’

The Central Board of Film Certification has granted an A (Adults Only) certificate to One Battle After Another in India.

Even in the US, it got an R-rating for “pervasive language, violence, sexual content, and drug use.” So, it was always going to be an A-rated movie in our country.

This means you need to be at least 18 years old to watch it in a movie theatre. I have a separate article on all the film certificates issued by our Film Board, if you would like to know more about the difference among them.

The best part is that no scene has been cut or trimmed from the movie. The approved runtime is 163 minutes.

Warner Bros’s VP for India, Denzil Dias has confirmed the news on X:

Thrilled to announce #OneBattleAfterAnother is rated ‘A’ with no visual cuts. Advance bookings open later today! Heads-up: IMAX screenings are a limited 6-day run. Secure your seats to experience one of this year’s best-rated films on the biggest screen!

However, this doesn’t mean CBFC has not asked for some alterations. This includes:

  • Obscene words are muted.
  • Vaping and liquor bottle scenes were blurred.

Interestingly, severe sexually suggestive dialogues are cleared without cuts. Kudos to CBFC for saving their scissors for this one. We know what they could have done. Just remember how they trimmed kiss scenes in Superman.

Denzil has also confirmed the muted words censorship is also quite minimal, so hopefully, it will not ruin the experience that much.

When and Where to stream One Battle After Another?

Warner Bros Discovery is the official distributor for the film, and so, it is 100% going to drop on HBO MAX in the USA. That streaming platform is not available here because HBO has partnered with Reliance’s Jio for local rights. That makes it easy to guess the OTT.

Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another (2)

One Battle After Another will be streaming in India on JioHotstar. The digital premiere date is yet to be announced.

I will recommend watching it on the big screen because it will take at least 3-5 months for it to come to Hotstar.

Reviews are calling it a ‘Masterpiece’

I am excited for the film, especially after the tremendous reviews it is getting. With 154 critics’ reviews, it is standing at a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. That makes it Leo’s best-rated film so far, same for PTA. Some are even calling it is a ‘masterpiece’ and will be a top Oscar contender this year.

Even Martin Scorsese has some words to share about it in a Q&A with: “A fascinating and extraordinarily made film [with] extraordinary performances everywhere.

More About The Movie

Paul Thomas Anderson wrote and directed One Battle After Another. He is adapting the plot and themes from Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland (1990), which he has wanted to do for a long time.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro are in the lead roles, supported by Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and introducing Chase Infiniti.

This collaboration between Paul and Leo is also long-awaited. Paul first approached Leonardo for a role in his Boogie Night film about 25 years ago. Leo had also expressed interest in working with him many times.

In the end, you can check out the official synopsis for the film here (via onebattleafteranothermovie.com): “Washed-up revolutionary Bob (DiCaprio) exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa (Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past.
