Before even introducing the DC Universe’s own Batman, DC Studios is bringing one of Dark Knight’s most interesting villains to the big screen: Clayface. But there is a problem.
While India loves superhero and horror movies, our “censor” board does not. Here’s everything you need to know about Clayface’s release in India.
Clayface Release Guide for Indian Fans
1) When is Clayface releasing in India?
Clayface is releasing in India on 23 October 2026. There will also be late-night preview screenings on 22 October.
Horror fans often prefer watching movies at midnight, which explains the early premiere.
With Clayface, DC Studios is bringing one of Batman’s most popular enemies to the big screen in a horror thriller style.
2) In which languages?
Clayface is only available in English and Hindi.
Usually, hollywood movies are dubbed in Tamil and Telugu also. The southern states also have a decent fanbase for DC Comics, but it seems Warner Bros. India failed to take that into account.
I understand it’s a smaller-scale film compared to something like Batman or Superman, but it’s still a DC movie and part of their larger universe. So, they should have dubbed it in all major local languages. Fans were complaining about it.
However, once the movie arrives on streaming platforms, more language options may become available.
3) When and where will Clayface drop on OTT?
The movie will release in theatres first, but it could arrive on OTT relatively soon. Since it’s a smaller production and I expect a shorter theatrical run, the studio might make it available to watch at home as early as this December.
Clayface will be streaming on JioHotstar in India. The digital premiere date is yet to be announced.
Warner Bros. has an exclusive partnership with Reliance’s Jio for local distribution of all their major content library. Superman is streaming on JioHotstar, and Lanterns is there too. Expect Clayface very soon.
4) Which scenes in Clayface are censored in India?
Looks like India’s censor board and DC Studios are not getting along. First, they cut 3 scenes from the Superman movie, and now it’s happening again with Clayface.
Despite receiving an A certificate from the CBFC, restricting Clayface to audiences aged 18 and above in India, around 24 seconds of scenes are also being cut from the movie.

The censored scenes include:
- Two shots involving nudity were removed or cropped (5-second and 19-second)
- Two shots were cropped or blurred (where a face was being smashed)
- Strong profanity words were voluntarily removed from subtitles
- Anti-alcohol and anti-drug messages were added
The scenes cut feature Joana Ribeiro, who plays Mia Torrez. Both scenes involve frontal nudity. Spoiler: These scenes occur early in the film.

The film was finally certified at a runtime of 1 hour and 48 minutes.
In the USA, it has also received a similar ‘R’ rating for “strong bloody violence, gore, language, some nudity, and brief drug use.” But they did not cut any footage.
It’s confusing that even after certifying it for ‘Adults-Only’ viewing, the CBFC has to order all these changes.
Such decisions are really disappointing and make me skip watching it in a theatre. I prefer to wait for its streaming release so I can watch the uncensored version.
5) Is Clayface Filmed for IMAX?
Clayface is not filmed for IMAX, and neither is the film being shown in an IMAX theatre.
This is quite confusing. I can understand not filming with IMAX cameras to keep costs down for such a low-budget movie, but they should have at least remastered it for IMAX.
Also, there is no 3D. I get this because a horror movie should never be watched with 3D glasses at all.
So, what other options do you have?
Clayface is available in these premium formats: ScreenX, ICE, and 4DX. Note that 4DX will be without 3D. Shows in Dolby Cinema or EPIQ might be added, but there is very little possibility of that happening, as there is not much buzz around it.
ScreenX uses 3 screens, with additional visuals extending onto the side walls during selected scenes. This creates a panoramic 270-degree viewing experience.
ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience) features LED panels along the auditorium walls to display ambient lighting that matches the action on the main screen.
4DX focuses on physical effects with moving seats and effects, such as wind, water sprays, fog, and vibrations, which are synchronised with the action on screen.
You can learn more about these premium formats here in the guide for Indian fans, and find such theatres in your city.
Also, Clayface was shot in a unique 2.76:1 aspect ratio that will be presented in the standard 2.39:1 aspect ratio in cinemas.
Here’s the reference:

This means that even on a regular cinema screen, you will notice black bars at the top and bottom of the image.
6) Who is in the cast? What’s the story?
The film features an ensemble cast led by Tom Rhys Harries, who plays Matt Hagen, an aspiring actor whose life takes a terrifying turn.
Naomi Ackie plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, while Max Minghella appears as John Borrelli. The supporting cast includes David Dencik, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James.
The story follows Matt Hagen, an actor whose career is cut short after a violent encounter with a local crime boss. He turns to an experimental treatment in the hope of restoring his appearance.
Here is the official synopsis:
“Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
In DC Comics, Clayface is a Batman villain with shape-shifting abilities.
The film is directed by James Watkins, with the story by Mike Flanagan.
7) Is Clayface connected to James Gunn’s DC Universe or Matt Reeves’ The Batman?
Clayface is part of the new DC Universe (DCU) created by James Gunn, which has already introduced Superman last year and Supergirl a few months ago. This will be the 3rd feature film in the new DCU.
The confusion starts with the inclusion of Matt Reeves (his production studio ‘6th & Idaho’) as one of the producers of this film. He made The Batman (2022) with Robert Pattinson and is currently working on its sequel.
Here, you need to understand that DC has more than one live-action franchise. Reeves’ The Batman is in a completely different universe, and James Gunn’s new DCU will soon introduce its own Batman that will eventually fight this version of Clayface.
8) Is there a post-credits scene?
There is no post-credits scene in the Clayface movie.
I thought the film should have included something at the end to address its place in this new cinematic universe. It is a very unexpected project, almost like an indie horror film, introducing a Batman villain at a time when we do not even have a Batman in this universe yet.
However, I believe what happened is that they still have not figured out the future of Clayface in the DCU.
Even James Gunn had no plans to make this movie in the first place until Mike Flanagan presented him with the script, which he liked so much that he decided to move forward with it.
10) What is Clayface’s box office in India?
The Indian box office collection is not available yet. I will update it as soon as the figures arrive
Currently, looking at the early booking report, Clayface had recorded approximately ₹1.89 crores across the preview.
Takeaways
Now you know all about the release of DC’s Clayface movie in India, including OTT, all censored scenes, cast, story, and premium formats.
I personally do not think this is a huge deal for the DC Universe, so it does not necessarily need to be a “great” movie. I also like the idea of taking such risks within the comic book genre. But it still needs to be good enough to justify its existence.
