Usually, the best way to watch any major Hollywood movie is IMAX, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not getting an IMAX release in India (also in the US and many other countries). So, what other option do you have? Here I ranked the top 10 formats to watch the next Spider-Man movie in India.
Two Versions of Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Spider-Man Brand New Day was going to be an IMAX release like any other Marvel movie. There was a version specifically made for IMAX, as confirmed by Director Destin Daniel Cretton.
He said in an interview:
“We shot this movie in two aspect ratios. We shot it in 2.39:1 for our scope theaters, and we also shot specifically for IMAX”
The IMAX version was in a 1.90:1 aspect ratio, taller than the regular scope screens.
However, then we got the news that The Odyssey, which had just released two weeks earlier, had locked the IMAX screens for itself. The Odyssey will have a multi-week exclusive run in IMAX. It is shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, and is heavily promoted for this format.
So, Spider-Man had to skip IMAX.
Even Sony Pictures India confirmed that:
That’s why Sony decided to make the IMAX expanded version available to all other theatres.
In short, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is mastered in two different versions:
- Scope (2.39:1 aspect ratio) version is designed for standard screens.
- Flat version (1.90:1 aspect ratio) version with expanded framing that fills taller Flat screens.
Note: The Flat aspect ratio is technically 1.85:1, while the IMAX expanded aspect ratio is 1.90:1. However, to keep this guide simple, I will refer to the Flat version as 1.90:1, since the difference is minimal.
See the difference between Scope and Flat:
Many premium formats in India are also Flat in size, and the frame will cover the screen from top to bottom. These screens will give you more image than a standard screen. The action scenes will feel much larger, and there will be extra visual details.
So, this guide will tell you the best option among them.
But before we move forward, know that some Indian theatres made a mistake by showing a Scope (2.39:1) version on Flat (1.85:1) screens when this situation of Dual-DCP happened with The Odyssey:
I hope theatres do not make the same mistake with Brand New Day, but I can’t be 100% sure about your local cinema. I can just advise that if they play the wrong version (scope in Flat), ask them for a refund.
Best Premium Formats to Watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in India
India now has more premium cinema formats than ever before. Audiences can choose Dolby Cinema, HDR by BARCO, EPIQ, PCX, ScreenX, ONYX LED, ICE, PXL, BIGPIX, and 4DX.
Each format offers something different:
1) Dolby Cinema
Cities: Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Trichy
Dolby Cinema is the best format to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day. These auditoriums are equipped with Dolby Vision 4K projectors and Dolby Atmos. This helps it achieve the best picture quality with rich colors and deep blacks.
India has 4 Dolby Cinemas, and here are their aspect ratios:
- Pune: Citypride (2.1:1)
- Bengaluru: AMB Cinemas (2.39:1)
- Trichy: LA Cinema (2.39:1)
- Hyderabad: Allu Cinemas (1.85:1)
Hyderabad’s Dolby Cinema (Allu Cinemas) will show the movie in the FLAT aspect ratio on their huge 75ft screen.
Also, Bengaluru’s Dolby Cinema can only have 2D shows, while all others are capable of 3D. And Dolby has the best 3D out of all formats.
2) HDR by BARCO
Cities: Hyderabad
If you are in Hyderabad and can’t go to Dolby, HDR by BARCO is your second best option. What you get is a 4K RGB projector by BARCO to present the brightest image possible, meaning vibrant colors and more sharpness.
There are two HDR by BARCO screens in Hyderabad:
- AMB Cinemas (Screen 1)
- Prasads Multiplex (Screen 4)
Both of them are 60 feet wide, and Prasads’s HDR by Barco is also a Flat screen, so you get the expanded ratio just like the IMAX.
3) EPIQ
Cities: Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Rajapalayam, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Sullurpeta
EPIQ is India’s own PLF format that is competing with IMAX. The screens are in 1.89:1 aspect ratio, perfect to fit the FLAT version of Spider-Man Brand New Day. That’s just the same as the IMAX experience.
EPIQ has also confirmed that they worked with Sony Pictures to remaster the best version possible for their screens. Spider-Man Brand New Day became the first-ever Hollywood movie to be mastered for the EPIQ format.
But what do you get here? Large wall-to-wall screens with 4K laser projectors and multi-channel Dolby Atmos audio systems.

- ART Cinemas EPIQ (Hyderabad)
- AAA Cinemas (Hyderabad)
- Vetri E Square EPIQ 1 (Thanjavur)
- Vetri E Square EPIQ 2 (Thanjavur)
- Broadway Cinemas EPIQ (Coimbatore)
- Rakki Cinemas (Chennai)
- E-Square Cinemas (Pune)
- Radiance Cinemas (Madurai)
- Radiance Cinemas (Rajapalayam)
- Palaxi Cinemas (Kozhikode)

- V-EPIQ (Sullurpeta)
V-EPIQ at Sullurpeta is also Asia’s biggest screen with a width of approximately 100 ft.
4) PCX
Cities: Hyderabad
If you are in Hyderabad, you must have heard of Prasads’ PCX screen, which is about 100 feet wide and has dual 4K laser projectors.
PCX might not be the most technically advanced out of the above options, but it is surely the biggest. And they will also get the Flat version in the 1.90:1 aspect ratio.
5) ScreenX
Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata
While the movie will expand vertically in other theatres, ScreenX expands the movie horizontally.
In a ScreenX auditorium, you will find two extra screens on the left and right walls. Certain sequences of the movie will extend on those side screens, creating a 270-degree panoramic view.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also the first movie ever to be “Shot for IMAX”. The ScreenX team visited the film’s set to shoot some scenes using their special 3-side cameras. So, you will find extra footage on the sides, only in ScreenX.
There are 4 ScreenX in India at:
- Mumbai: INOX Megaplex, Inorbit Mall, Malad
- Kolkata: INOX, Quest Mall
- Delhi: INOX, Pacific Mall, Jasola
- Bengaluru: INOX Megaplex, Mall of Asia
All the ScreenX shows are only in 3D presentations.
I’m going to watch this movie in ScreenX, and it’ll be my first time experiencing the format.
6) ONYX
Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru
ONYX is a unique format as it doesn’t rely on projectors. This is Samsung’s Cinema technology where there is a huge LED Display, which might look small in size (compared to other PLFs), but produces one of the sharpest and highest-contrast images you will ever see.
There are 4 ONYX screens in India:
- DLF Avenue Saket, New Delhi
- INOX Megaplex Malad, Mumbai
- Swagath Shankarnag, Bengaluru
- INOX E5 MCity Mall, Bengaluru
All of them are also Flat screens, so theatres can easily play the expanded 1.90:1 version on them. All shows here will be in 2D format.
7) PXL / BIGPIX
Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Noida, Faridabad, Chandigarh Tricity, Lucknow, Surat, Kochi, Indore, Goa, Coimbatore
PXL and BIGPIX are PLFs by Indian cinema chain PVR-INOX. They are specially designed to have large screens with high-end projectors, improved seating, and better sound systems.
Some of these are also Flat (1.85:1) screens such as:
- Delhi: PVR PXL Cinemagic Unity One Elegante
- Kolkata: PVR PXL Mani Square
- Hyderabad: PVR PXL Lakeshore
- Chandigarh: PVR PXL CP67, Mohali
- Indore: INOX BigPix Citadel Mall
- Kochi: PVR PXL Forum Mall
- Pune: PVR PX: Grand Highstreet Hinjewadi
On these screens, you will get an IMAX-like experience, with the image filling the screen from top to bottom.
Other PXL and BIGPIX screens across India are scope screens, meaning you get the aspect ratio of 2.39:1 as usual. Still, the size of the screen will be larger than any regular one.
8) ICE
Cities: Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, Gurugram
ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience) is one of the lesser-known PLFs where they add LED side panels on both left and right walls. These panels display synchronised colors according to the movie to provide some kind of immersion.
ICE screens in India are located at:
- Delhi: PVR Promenade, Vasant Kunj
- Gurugram: PVR Ambience
- Pune: PVR Director Cut, KOPA
- Bengaluru: PVR Superplex Forum Mall
All of them are scope screens.
9) 4DX
4DX converts the Spider-Man movie into a theme park-style attraction. Instead of giving you more pictures of extra lights, this format adds moving seats and environmental effects that happen according to what’s happening on the screen.
I am not a fan of it as it feels too gimmicky and distracts you a lot. But kids like it, and if you want to give them some unique experience, you can give 4DX a try.
10) IMAX
IMAX is often considered the first choice for most moviegoers, but as I explained before, Spider-Man:n Brand New Day is not getting an IMAX release in India.
The Odyssey will stay on IMAX screens for a few more days. It is also reported that this exclusive run will end on 14 August and then another Warner Bros movie, The End of Oak Street, will take over.
So, there is very little chance that we can watch Brand New Day in IMAX. If it happens, it’s definitely a good choice for a re-watch. You get the expanded 1.90:1 aspect ratio on their large screens with high-tech projectors and sound systems.
If none of these formats are available, or the prices are too high, your regular screen is still good for both 2D and 3D versions.
